West Fife CSS: Active Steps Project

Team Building

This project is a joint initiative between West Fife Community Support Services (WFCSS) and Education. The project will enable staff from WFCSS to work in collaboration with schools to identify young people with a learning disability who, in the near future when they come of age to leave school, will be most likely to access they support services available from WFCSS. The funding which has been made available stipulates that 70% of activities must involve sports/outdoor pursuits. This pilot project has been funded for 1 year.
The project will enable staff to build strong and positive relationships with the identified young people by working with them through a progressive PSD programme. The course will off a mix of personal and social development focussed activities; involving informal outdoor learning experiences, social group work as well as employability and independent living skills. The programme will both support the personal development of participants whilst simultaneously assisting them during the difficult transition period which young people with learning disabilities experience as they move from being involved with education to Social Work support services.
The project will work with young people for 1 full day per week. All participants will be involved in the Natural Connections programme and will take part in a short residential experience. It is intended to operate two 20 week programmes each year. Each course will target a new group of up to 8 participants.
Some of the activities they will be involved in include:
Team building, walking, archery, biking, canoeing, orienteering, sessions at Craigencalt Ecology Centre, Lochore Meadows and Fordell Firs.
