Robert Gough: Social Inclusion

At present there is  one designated full-time Community Support Worker within the Robert Gough Centre whose work focuses on assisting individuals towards leading ordinary lives as adults fully included in the community.

All Day Centre Officers are now adopting a person-centred approach with many service users, therefore all aspects of an individual's life are considered . Any barriers that may exist which prevent people pursuing their interests for example, communication, health, finance, housing, support and social skills are prioritised and acted on.

A close working relationship with the family promotes a partnership in looking for the best way forward for the individual to achieve their desired future.

Social inclusion is introduced to people by providing ‘open afternoons’ where information is available in leaflet form which clearly states the aims. Opportunities are given to hear what Social inclusion has to offer and time given to answering questions.

From there, people are encouraged to think about what is required by them and what they can expect from the Community Support Worker or Day Centre Officer. It is explained that the individual makes the choices and decisions whilst the Support Worker helps provide opportunity and taster sessions to work towards pursuing their own interests and making positive changes in their lives. These can be as large or as small as the individual feels comfortable with and at their pace.

It is of course essential to maintain the active involvement of family and carers who have a wealth of knowledge which is vital in making this a valuable, progressive, fun and life changing experience.

Contact: Liz Gavin or any Day Centre Officer.
