In Search of Equality

Quest Theatre Company, which has been operating since 1996, aims to contribute to a society where everyone is treated equally. Quest is based at the St Clair Centre in Kirkcaldy, a day centre for people with disabilities. Quest Theatre company aims to educate, entertain and to promote a positive image of people with learning disabilities.

Quest's highly acclaimed show The Bus Stop has been performed in over 60 schools throughout Fife. The Bus Stop consists of several short dramatic pieces created and performed by 10 adults with special needs. It depicts the hopes and aspirations and some of the difficulties faced by people with disabilities.

About 5000 school children have seen The Bus Stop and judging from the feedback received via hundreds of letters and questionnaires, the message is getting through:

Two comments are:

"Thank you for inviting us to your marvellous show. Now I know how it feels to be bullied like that. Your play was brilliant." Nicola, Carleton Primary.
"I enjoyed the show and think you were very good. I hope that you get famous and encourage other people to do things like you." Andrew, Dalgety Bay Primary.

Quest Theatre Company has performed in theatres, community centres, colleges, festivals and town halls throughout Fife to an estimated audience of over 5000 adults. The company has also performed in Glasgow City Chambers after receiving an award from STV and the Community Education Council as part of the European Year for Lifelong Learning.

In November 1998, at the invitation if the Lynebank Discharge Programme, the group performed in Holland to a Sixth Form College, a Carers' Forum and a Teachers' Training College. They completed their tour by performing in the impressive marble building that also witnessed the signing of the Maastricht Treaty.

Quest has also performed a piece, written by their former producer and now freelance writer, Shona Dryburgh. The Freedom Man, which is essentially a 21st century rap, and was premiered at the Rothes Halls in June.2000

In 2002 the group were invited to Aberdeen where they helped launch an anti-bullying campaign. The organisers also hoped that the performance by the group would provide the inspiration for the setting up of a similar group in the Aberdeen area.

More recently, in May of 2004 and 2005, the group performed to over 700 people on each of the days at the National Learning Disability Conferences in Glasgow.

They are currently working on a video production of their work.

The overall aim of Quest is to contribute to a society where everyone is treated equally. More specifically, it is to educate, entertain and to promote a positive image for people with learning disability.

Every year they take their show to between 10-20 Primary Schools within Fife.. Recent schools to have seen the show include the Pitcoudie and Pitreavie Primary Schools in Dunfermline,Kelty Primary School, Leslie Primary, Crossgates, Auchtertool and Pitteuchar  West
