Advocacy

Overview

We feel it is important to encourage people using the service to speak up or themselves both as individuals and as groups who may have shared concerns.

We do this in a variety of ways that cover activities within the centre and those that involve them in the wider community.

Women's Independent Disability Network (WIDN)

A group of ladies from the Centre are supported to attend the monthly meetings of WIDN at St Bryces Kirk in Kirkcaldy, which is for women with physical and learning disabilities. The programme is a mixture of social and educational subjects and has included The Rambling Association, Pension Rights and Flower Arranging. The members have made friends and enjoy the social contact over a cup of tea.

Sports at St Clair

The St. Clair Centre participates in a wide range of sports and games activities. Included in these are:

Athletics
Swimming
Carpet & Lawn Bowls
Ten Pin Bowling
Golf Practise

A Fife Sports Week is held annually where our members are involved in the following competitions:

Employment Opportunities

A member of staff supports centre members to gain work experience with organisations such as KFC, Sainsbury's and various Charity shops. This allows people the opportunity to gain an insight into various types of employment whether this is for them or not

Ladies Group

Ladies of varying abilities coming together to discuss and learn all about personal presentation/health issues etc. Some may have showers/wash hair etc. while others may paint nails/use face masks or have a foot spa - general pampering while learning.

Talk Shop

Talk Shop is a small support group for carers, meeting on a monthly basis in the centre. The members have visited other care establishments and places of interest. They have also invited speakers to give them up-to-date information and benefits to which they are entitled and advise them on legal matters such as leaving a house to someone in their will. They have even enjoyed the occasional bar lunch!

Leisure & Recreation

One very important aspect of the service we provide is the development and maintaining of friendships and companionship that members identify as important to them.

Many of these are sustained through the leisure and recreational activities made available at the centre.

Developing Skills

Our approach to this is that many of the skills we require in our daily lives are developed and enhanced as we go about and participate in the activities that interest us.

By working in a person centred way, we can help individuals identify the things that are important to them.

Often the activity itself supports a number of skills, such as getting on with people, communication, sharing, safety concerns etc. which can be encouraged and supported whilst enjoying the chosen activity.

Sometimes specific skills are identified and can be worked on in their own right.
