Caledonian Awards

On the 30th of April, a group of 8 service users completed their Caledonian Award. This is an award similar to the Duke of Edinburgh Award and includes a residential trip. The group were; Andrew Hunter, Alan Johnstone, Ijaz Ali Anwar, Robbie Mckenzie Smith, Lisa Dishington , Tonia Coe, Wendy Robertson and Wendy Thomson.

For the last 18 months we have been learning skills that we can put to use on the residential trip. These include personal skills that encourage independence such as cooking; physical recreation skills such as walking and community service skills that involve services given to others.

We chose to go to Comrie in Perthshire with exclusive accommodation in a farmhouse which is part of a youth hostel. It is called Comrie Croft and is between Crieff and Comrie. What a lovely scenic area of Scotland!

The skills came in useful right from the start as we had to do our own shopping for the 4 days.

The first night was spent exploring the area and indulging in some delicious homemade ice cream! (The chocolate was outstanding however, moo flavour was also delicious!)

The weather was wet all day Monday however the rain stopped just before we started our walk on Tuesday morning and the sun even came out for a wee while. We planned to walk a route called ëThe Deilís Cauldroní that would last all day and was about 5 miles long. We werenít sure what to expect but everyone had a ball, even enjoying the more challenging parts of the walk. Again, the scenery was fantastic and the waterfalls (the cauldron) were spectacular!

On Wednesday we visited ëLandmarkí in Carrbridge, an outdoor attraction that has lots of activities to suit all of us including a rope walk that Tonia and Christian tackled and a huge waterslide that some of our group also enjoyedÖ.very brave! The weather was lovely all day and warm in the sun.

We had planned our menus before going and did most of the cooking even when we were tired. It was great to have everyone working together even doing the dishes.

There are also some new porridge lovers after having it for breakfast each morning. Tonia reports that she has it every morning now.

Unfortunately, we have had a few problems with cameras although we took lots of super photos so watch this space, we will add them when we can, hopefully in the next week.

We will be carrying out an interview with one of the residential group, you can read it here in the next few weeks.
