Grange: Blairhall Satellite Group

This Outreach Group is an extension of the Grange Resource Centre based in Dunfermline. The service users meet every Tuesday from 9.15am until 3pm in the New Community Centre in the village of Blairhall. The setting is very relaxed, friendly and informal. Members who attend this group are residents of the West Fife villages of Oakley, Comrie, Valleyfield and Crombie.

The Group are mainly self-funding, although they do receive some assistance from Fife Council Social Work by way of transport and support staff. The group also have support from two regular volunteers who live in the village. Staff are there in both an advisory capacity, to encourage individuals within the group to express their personal wishes and aspirations and to identify any particular needs. Activities are then developed and opportunities explored to help individuals to achieve their wishes. This may be supporting members to plan outings or activities of special interest such as, arts and crafts, gardening, quizzes or arranging shopping trips for group requirements.

Monies are raised by annual fund raising events and occasional grants. The group usually organise a Bingo Tea and Raffle in the spring and a coffee morning and Tombola in the autumn. These events are always well supported by members of the local community, both individuals and businesses with lots of lots of prizes being donated and good attendance on the day.

At the rear of the building there are two purpose built gardens with raised flowerbeds for which the group has assumed responsibility. In good weather the group members are involved in planting, weeding and watering or just sitting enjoying the views and having a blether.

The group have their own computer and digital camera and individuals can be supported to learn new skills or improve their existing skills. There is an aerobics class held in the main hall of the centre of Tuesday afternoons and some members of the group join in with this for gentle exercise and refreshments.

A Burns Day Lunch is organised by the group each year, usually with special guests and entertainers from the local villages. One of the highlights of the day last year was recitations of Scottish Poetry by several of the local primary school children.

The group also plan summer outings a bit further afield and these have included trips to Museums in Glasgow and Edinburgh, The Falkirk Wheel via the Seagull Trust Barge, The Royal Yacht Britannia and Discovery Point at Dundee.

The group have their own committee and everyone is involved in decision making. Their aims are to share experiences and activities, promote independence and raise awareness of disability issues. This group is well known in the village and have made many lasting relationships with local people. Group members have made donations, both monetary and equipment, to the local primary school promoting the group’s belief in giving something back to the community.
