Our group is an extension of the Grange Resource Centre based in Dunfermline, and at present serves members from Rosyth, Dalgety Bay and Hillend. We meet in the Parkgate Community Centre in Rosyth on Mondays and Wednesdays between 9.00am and 3.00pm. There are members in our group, two of whom attend on a Monday and four members who also attend the Grange Resource Centre in Dunfermline.
Parkgate Community Centre is set within well-developed gardens and the group have a sensory garden area with lavender, mint and thyme. The centre has a relaxed and informal setting and Centre staff are very welcoming. Members have access to the computer suite, snooker and carpet bowls. The cafÈ serves snacks and lunches at reasonable prices, which group members enjoy.
We are a self-funding group, but do, however, receive assistance from the Grange Centre by way of staffing and transport. We usually hold two fund-raising events each year which help towards summer outings, activities and Christmas festivities. These have included bingo teas, coffee mornings, raffles and Tombolas. We have also been fortunate to receive donations from local businesses and groups.
This year (2008) the members are working on hand made silk prints which are then framed and sold to raise funds. Another brand new idea for 2008 is Encaustic Waxing, a therapeutic and creative activity. Once again the pictures are framed or made into bookmarks and sold at our Fayreís or given to friends and family as gifts.
Group members are very supportive of each other and we recognise the importance of personal development, confidence building and improving self-esteem. We are committed to getting out and about in our community and to accepting the opportunity to change peopleís perceptions of disability. Some members have developed computer skills and have been awarded certificates for their achievements. This happens in a relaxed environment where people can learn at their own pace.
Other members may prefer games, quizzes, sports or discussion groups. The focus of the group is to value the individual and wherever possible to support peopleís wishes and needs.
Throughout the year we also attend and support any fundraising activities or fun days that members at the Grange Resource Centre are involved in.
Recently the group have been involved in supporting the Dog Sanctuary in West Calder and have visited the centre twice, taking a supply of food, toys, treats and warm blankets which several of the ladies of the group knitted in their own time.
We are always on the lookout for local exhibitions or places of interest to visit and we do enjoy the occasional bar lunch. In the summer we look forward to outings further afield and have visited M&Dís Funpark in Strathclyde, Boness Railway, and as mentioned earlier, West Calder Dog Sancutary, to name but a few.
At the centre we have organised sports and quiz afternoons, a visit from a guide dog and her owner, Burns Lunches, Easter Celebrations and Birthday Parties for our members, as well as the Christmas Festivities. We enjoy a wide variety of activities and staff are always on hand to provide encouragement and support.
