Dalgairn: Social and Recreation

Select Speaker icon to download and listen to this audio file!Gill Gordon introduces Social and Recreation activities. (1:55 mns)

We recognise the importance of friendship, the opportunity to explore different activities, share with others, relaxation, stimulation and visiting and using a variety of places in enabling us to lead interesting and fulfilled lives. Social and recreation will enable people to do this in whatever way suits their needs whether it be a couple of hours per week to using the service full time.

We welcome and actively encourage users' suggestions about how they want to use their time, from having coffee with friends to rock climbing! The relationships people form with each other and staff are seen as key and the opportunity to form these through shared interest and common experiences is seen as a vital ingredient.

Activities can be planned or spur of the moment, long term or a one off, and will often be driven by the weather, time of the year or availability. It is OK to try something and decide you do not like it, and this experience is seen as an important element of the services. Hopefully people using the service will grow in confidence and become more open to trying new things.

The staff team will be supplemented by volunteers and students, and offer a broad range of skills and interests to support people using the services.

Services will be provided wherever is most appropriate and natural (e.g. bowling alley, Dundee, cafes, the hills, theatre, etc.) Anywhere that can enhance people’s life experience and help them to feel good about who they are. The location or service that people use will be dictated by their wishes and needs, not by where they live.

Social and Recreation is all about the little things that can release skills that people never knew they had.

It is about:

  • Life
  • Fun
  • Living it
  • Valuing yourself and others and learning from what this brings
