Dalgairn: Skills Development

I've done it ! I can do it !

Skills Development is a key area of our service that can work with people who wish to aquire specific skills to reach their goals, increase independence and feel good about themselves.

This may relate to any aspect of life as long as it is agreed, appropriate, designed for the individual and does not represent any unacceptable risk to that person.

We aim to provide a learning environment that encourages participants to respond to a wide range of learning stimulus and to feel valued for their achievements.

Learning needs to be relevant and attractive to the individual. Everyone learns new skills at different rates and in different ways, so it is important to initially ascertain the learner interests and motivations.

A learning plan will be designed and agreed with realistic goals, specific outcomes and the identified teaching method to be used. Such plans will cover learning small steps in managable 'bites'  to supporting individuals in gaining nationally recognised qualifications in more formal settings according to individuals needs, interests and commitment. Regardless of their ability, everyone is able to learn.

Such approaches will aim to give a sense of achievement to all involved. Great importance will then be given to creating opportunities for these learned skills to be used in day to day life to ensure they are reinforced and not lost.

A wide range of resources will be developed, which are relevant and appropriate to the needs of service users including a skilled and focused staff team able to concentrate on this specific element of the service. The expertise of other agencies will also be encouraged,  facilitated and utilised wherever possible.

The scope of activities is limitless and the nature of the skills could be broadly categorised as follows.

  • Social
  • Emotional
  • Personal
  • Functional
  • Self-help

Dependent on the nature of the skill and the circumstances of the individual, the location for skills development would be in the most obvious, normal and natural setting. This could be the person's home, community settings, work environments, town, countryside, purpose-built facility or service provided environment (e.g. training house/kitchen, shower facility etc.).
